Kwik-Klik installed 67 linear metres of Kentledge hoarding to enable construction works to proceed at Chalkwell Station, which has a beach-side location in Southend on Sea.
There are very few Kwik-Klik installations that are sited as close to the sea as this one and it created a number of extra challenges.
Two important factors in the engineers design led to the specification of the Kentledge system we installed.
Sand, wind and corrosion
The first consideration was that most of the hoarding sits on the beach to create a works compound around the station. Following a topological survey, the Kentledge system was selected to sit securely on the undulating beach with the concrete anchor blocks placed at one metre intervals providing the strength and stability needed to support the hoarding. The robust system also ensures that coastal winds will not topple the hoarding.
A second consideration was potential corrosion caused by the combination of salty sea air and sand. Painted timber hoardings would be particularly susceptible to corrosion damage, but our re-usable 2.4m white PVC panels are unaffected.
Station upgrade works
The 12-month project will include the demolition of the passenger bridge which can be seen in some of the photographs.
A set of mesh vehicular gates and a digi-lock Personnel Door were built into the hoarding to allow secure site access for trade teams, plant and materials.
The reusable PVC panels are made from 100% recycled PVC. The panels are 100% recyclable at the end of their usable life.
